The Name and Origin
of Semmering

The name “Semmering” likely comes from the Old Slavic word “Semmerick,” meaning a place that is inhospitable or difficult to access. The exact origins of Semmering are unclear, but its strategic location made it an important trade route in the Middle Ages. Mules carried barrels of wine, salt, and iron across the Semmering Pass, connecting Vienna with Venice.

A 19th-Century Resort
for the Elite

Semmering gained fame as a resort town in the 19th century. It became a favorite retreat for Vienna’s upper classes and wealthy middle class. This was largely due to the opening of the Semmering Railway in 1854, an engineering marvel of its time. Notable figures like Emperor Charles I of Austria and the painter Oskar Kokoschka visited often. The late 19th century saw a boom in luxury hotels to accommodate the influx of affluent visitors. However, World War II ended this golden era. Many grand hotels were abandoned due to the war’s devastation, poorness of the country and the loss of the rich Jewish population.

A distinctive medallion by Franz Xaver Pönninger adds to its charm. Ghega, born in Venice to an Albanian family, was destined for a naval career but instead pursued mathematics, earning his doctorate in just two years. His friendship with the Rothschilds boosted his career, making him a respected figure in railway construction.

Parish Church of Semmering

The Parish Church of Semmering, built in 1894 and expanded in 1908, showcases a captivating blend of late Romanesque and early Gothic architectural styles. Designed by Gustav Neumann, the church was created to meet the needs of Semmering’s growing population and is dedicated to the Holy Family, standing as a significant landmark in the town. Neumann’s architectural influence extends beyond Semmering, as he also designed the government building of the Principality of Liechtenstein, which served as the parliament until 2008. Additionally, the historical importance of Liechtenstein is highlighted by Johann II of Liechtenstein, who signed the first constitution of the Principality in 1862.

The land for the church's construction was donated by Prince Liechtenstein, who also sponsored the building.
