The Highest Swimming Pool
in Vienna
Krapfenwaldlbad is the highest swimming pool in Vienna. It offers amazing views of the city on one side and beautiful hills on the other. Vineyards surround the area, making the location special. Because of this, Krapfenwaldlbad is one of the most popular swimming pools in the capital of Austria.
Where Is
Krapfenwaldlbad Located?
Krapfenwaldlbad is in the 19th district of Vienna, Döbling. The pool sits on Krapfenwaldl Hill, which stands 354 meters above sea level. Although the name sounds like the German word for doughnuts (Krapfen), it actually comes from Franz Josef Krap. He was an official who owned property nearby.
The History of Krapfenwaldlbad
Krapfenwaldlbad opened in 1923 during the time of “Red Vienna.” After World War I, the city wanted to improve the lives of the people. Many swimming pools were built to help citizens enjoy leisure time and take care of their health. Krapfenwaldlbad was part of this initiative.

Even though the name suggests a connection to sweets, the pool was named after Franz Josef Krap and his estate, Krapfenhütte. This estate is now the main building, where you can buy tickets, when visiting the pool. Krapfenwaldlbad is also famous for being one of the first pools in Vienna with a nudist area. The pool was damaged during World War II but reopened in 1952.

The Legend of Krapfenwaldl
A local legend adds mystery to the Krapfenwaldl forest. A boy discovered a bowl full of doughnuts while walking through the woods. Soon, a small black figure appeared and offered him even more doughnuts if he agreed to give up his soul. The boy didn’t believe it was the devil. To test him, he told the figure to turn into a giant, then into an acorn. The figure obeyed, and the boy trapped the acorn in a pouch. He took it to the blacksmith, who hammered it until the devil promised to leave the boy’s soul alone.
This is how the forest got its name, “Krapfenwaldl.”
