A Brief History of Prater:
Prater, derived from the Latin word Pratum, meaning meadow or pasture, has had various owners over the centuries, from monasteries like Klosterneuburg to the Habsburgs. In the 16th century, Emperor Maximilian II designated it as a hunting ground for the Habsburgs. To facilitate this, avenues were created, including what is now known as the Hauptallee.
Originally, access to Prater was reserved for the imperial family, with exceptions made for certain dignitaries. However, Empress Maria Theresa advised visitors to stay mainly along the main avenue. Her son, Emperor Joseph II, opened Prater to the public, allowing people of all backgrounds to enjoy it. He also permitted the establishment of the first stalls serving food and wine.
By 1782, Prater had taverns, two carousels, and other attractions. Over the following years, it continued to grow, hosting parades and even celebrations related to the imperial family. In preparation for the 1873 World’s Fair, Prater was reorganized and expanded, with the construction of the Rotunde and the creation of an artificial hill. In 1897, the iconic Ferris wheel was opened, which remains a symbol of Vienna to this day.
During World War II, Prater was partially destroyed and also served as the site of a forced labor camp, one of many in Vienna.

Die Niederösterreich-CARD:
This seasonal card costs around 70 euros per year and grants you access to 350 places across Austria, including Vienna, without the need for additional tickets. It’s best to purchase it in March, allowing you to enjoy tourist attractions until the end of the next season in March. You can buy it online or at selected sales points.
Vorteilsclub:
The Vorteilsclub card is free and can be registered for online. Unlike the Niederösterreich-CARD, which mainly offers free entry, the Vorteilsclub card provides discounts.
