Why Choose Public Transport
in Austria?
Austria’s public transport is reliable, clean, and eco-friendly. You can travel seamlessly between cities, towns, and even remote mountain areas thanks to the extensive network of trains, buses, and trams.
Public Transport in Vienna
All You Need to Know
Vienna’s public transport system is a highlight for both locals and visitors. It includes the U-Bahn (metro), trams, buses, and S-Bahn (local trains). Wiener Linien operates most of the city’s transport services, and there’s a unified ticket system for all modes of transport. This means one ticket lets you hop on buses, trams, and metro without hassle.
Good to Know
The U-Bahn line U6 is the only line that runs mostly above ground. It’s great for sightseeing, as you can enjoy views of the city while traveling. While it doesn’t pass by many of Vienna’s main historical landmarks, you can spot the famous Spittelau waste incineration plant designed by Hundertwasser. Apart from that, the line offers a glimpse into Vienna’s beautiful local architecture and vibrant neighborhoods.
U5 Line
Vienna’s newest U-Bahn line, U5, is currently under construction and set to open soon. It will be the first fully driverless metro line in Vienna, featuring advanced safety systems and sleek, modern trains. Initially, it will connect Frankhplatz to Karlsplatz, and the line will expand further by 2028.

and Short-Term Passes
- 1-Fahrt Wien (Single Ride): From €1.20, perfect for a quick trip across town.
- 24/48/72-Hour Passes: From €8.00, offering unlimited rides for the chosen period. These passes are great for tourists planning to explore the city intensively.
- 7-Day Pass: For €18.00, this pass is perfect for a week-long stay in Vienna.
2. Special Passes

Your Way to Vienna Airport
If you have a long-term Vienna ticket, it covers travel up to Schwechat Bahnhof (the last station in the Vienna city zone).
To get to the airport, buy a single ticket for the section Schwechat – Flughafen Wien, which costs about €2.40.
The S-Bahn S7 is the cheapest option and goes directly to the airport.
Note: Your long-term ticket does not cover the CAT (City Airport Train), which costs around €12 — best to avoid if you’re looking to save.

Travel Tips and Useful Apps
1. Download the WienMobil App
The WienMobil App is your best companion in Vienna. It allows you to buy tickets, check schedules, and plan routes with real-time information. You can also find bike-sharing options and electric scooters through the app. Another great app to use is the ÖBB App, which not only covers longer trips and regional trains but also lets you buy Wiener Linien tickets for travel within Vienna.
Note: It’s usually cheaper to buy tickets through the app than at ticket machines, so make sure to use the apps for the best prices!
2. Validate Your Ticket
Remember to validate your ticket before boarding. Look for the yellow or orange validation boxes at stations or inside trams and buses. Unvalidated tickets can result in hefty fines if you’re caught without one.
The fine for traveling without a ticket on Wiener Linien is €105 if paid within 14 days, and €145 after that. For ÖBB, the penalty is €120 if paid quickly, but it rises to €150 if delayed. Inspections are frequent, so it’s best to always have a valid ticket.
