What “Austria by Öffis” means?

Uban Obb sign Austria with background

Austria by Öffis (Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel = public transport) signifies exploring Austria through its public transport system. If you reside in or visit Vienna, it’s valuable to note that 70% of the city’s inhabitants rely on public transport. Each day, Wiener Linien’s routes encompass the globe up to five times, providing Vienna residents with access to the world’s 6th longest tram network.

The prevalence of efficient public transport means that only 16% of Vienna’s population drives a car daily, with car ownership not symbolizing status. In fact, only 372 out of 1,000 Viennese own a car, significantly lower than the EU average of 560.

Public transport in Vienna boasts eco-friendly credentials, with just one percent of the city’s ecological footprint attributed to it. Eighty percent of passengers utilize electric transport powered by 100% renewable energy sources.

The ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) is also at the forefront, transporting 494 million passengers annually in a country with less than 10 million inhabitants. With trains running on 100% green energy and boasting a punctuality rate of 95%, Öffis is the preferred choice for sustainable travel.

Why was the blog created?

Two men with celling

Firstly, because we enjoy travelling in Austria ourselves, visiting interesting, often little known places and want to promote the culture and history of this country. Kordian used to work for an international children’s non-governmental organisation that had its origins in Austria, but financial problems forced the organisation to cut positions, including Kordian’s. We are using this as an opportunity to start something new that will allow us to become independent and move forward. We would be grateful for your financial support by shopping in our store or by using the Steady portal.

Why Austria?

Austrian Map

Kordian was working as a project manager for Poland’s largest and oldest NGO, which focuses on fighting disinformation and fake news online. One day, he had to leave work at exactly 4pm for a surprise trip. Kordian and Michael went to the airport and flew to Vienna. During their first visit, Michael mentioned that Vienna was a city he could see himself living in. A year later, Michael received an offer from his office to move to the Austrian capital. Kordian stayed in Warsaw to finish his current projects, drop out of his PhD plans and leave his career as an NGO project manager. Eventually, Kordian joined Michael in Vienna and that’s where they both ended up.
